READ ALL THE FACTS on Jay Collins' record of service and sacrifice
Verdict: GUILTY of bleeding for this country. Twice.
Jay Collins served more than 23 years in the U.S. Army as a Green Beret Special Forces medic (18D) with the 7th and 1st Special Forces Groups. In April 2007 in Afghanistan he was shot in the left arm during a firefight and — a trained medic — helped operate on himself in the field before returning to combat thirty days later. That August, mortar fire wounded him again, earning the second of his two Purple Hearts. A later injury cost him his left leg. The Army could have medically retired him; instead, about a year after the amputation he was ruled fully fit for duty — a deployable, one-legged Green Beret — and served five more years before retiring as a First Sergeant. His decorations include two Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit, the Soldier's Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
